  • Acts of Compassion is a leading charitable organization located in Nairobi, Kenya. Our core values revolve around community empowerment, accountability, collaboration, compassion, respect and integrality. We are driven by a strong desire to create positive transformation and empower local communities by providing them with affordable and sustainable solutions to overcome their challenges through volunteer opportunities and funding, where possible.


    Acts of compassion started in 2019 during the COVID pandemic. We felt led to contribute resources and utilize our skills to address social issues that were caused by the pandemic . As an organization, our aim was to find ways to support people because the pandemic had caused significant economic hardship due to loss of employments and reduction of income in business We are deeply connected to our community so we had a strong understanding of needs and challenges. This knowledge allowed us to respond quickly to make the biggest impact possible. We steeped in to provide food packages, delivering essential supplies such soap and water to vulnerable population through partnering with local and international donors. Through our unwearing commitment we made a significant difference in the lives of individuals in our community.


    This is when we recognized the importance of collective actions in solving social problems in a high poverty area. We came up with idea of coming up with a volunteer organization as a platform for individuals to channel their skills, time, mobilize resources to support others who are need in the community. As of 2023, we are officially registered as a nonprofit organization. Our aim is to empower individuals and communities to become self –reliant and self-sustainable by providing skills , training, knowledge transfer, and resources that enable long-term development.

    1. Teaching in Nairobi

    If you choose our teaching programme located in Nairobi, you will be placed at either a community or government school as these types of schools have a shortage of teachers all over the country.


    Often classes are large and under-resourced. With this type of programme, you will be able to make a genuine difference and see how your work is benefitting the children first hand.


    This programme offers a hands-on experience that will allow you to gain teaching experience and also make a difference to the learning of young children.


    Volunteers will take part in the following 
    • Teaching basic English, mathematics, science, social studies and other subjects.

    • Writing homework assignments

    • Marking examinations

    • Making teaching materials

    • Assist with teaching computer literacy


    2. Teaching In Maasai Land

    If you choose our teaching programme located in the Maasai, you will be placed at a Government school. Many of the schools are located within rural settings often with no electricity.


    As a volunteer in the Maasai you will be able to immerse yourself in the unique culture of the Maasai community, one of the only communities in Africa that still practices their culture. With this type of programme you will be able to make a genuine difference and see how your work is benefitting the children first hand.


    Often classes are large and under-resourced. This programme offers a hands-on experience that will allow you to gain teaching experience and also make a difference to the learning of young children.


    Volunteers will take part in the following 
    • Teaching basic English, mathematics, science, social studies and other subjects.

    3. Teaching In Mombasa

    Mombasa is a city within Kenya located in a town setting by the beach.  If you choose this specific teaching programme you will be placed at either a community or Government school as these types of schools have a shortage of teachers all over the country. The need for volunteers in Mombasa are great so you will be able to make a genuine difference and see how your work is beneficial first hand.


    Often classes are large and under-resourced. This programme offers a hands-on experience that will allow you to gain teaching experience and also make a difference to the learning of young children. This program is located in south and north cost with stunning beaches which has been voted as the best beach in Africa . 


    This program allows you to combine vacation at the beach with volunteer work.

    After your volunteer work and on the weekends you are able to explore marine life. There are several activities you can do such as boat trips, scuba diving, swimming and more .


    Volunteers will take part in the following 
    • Teaching basic English, mathematics, science, social studies and other subjects.

    • Writing homework assignments

    • Marking examinations

    • Making teaching materials

    • Assist with teaching computer literacy


    4. Kindergarten

    If you are a someone who loves working with young children and helping those who are in need then this your opportunity. As a volunteer you will be placed in a community, government school, or a community day-care centre.


    The purpose of this programme is to offer love and care to children to underprivileged families. Most of the schools we partner with usually have a lot of students. Therefore, volunteers are able to provide invaluable help, assisting in teaching and caring for the children.


    Volunteers will take part in the following
    • Taking care of young children

    • Playing with the children

    • Helping prepare food

    • Feeding the children

    • Cleaning the centre or class

    (This programme is available in Nairobi, Mombasa, Maasai, and Nakuru.)



    5. Special Needs Teaching

    Special needs units in most Kenyan schools have a range of needs, with children with cerebral palsy, deafness, learning disabilities, cognitive delays, communication delay, downs syndrome etc.


    Each one of our special needs children are eager to learn.  They require various modifications and adaptations to the academic curriculum in order to reach their highest level of potential and success. As volunteer you be placed in a school with children who have different needs.


    Volunteers will take part in the following
    • Helping to assist teaching social and communication skills and self-care practices.

    • Teaching basic academic skills such as numeracy and literacy

    • Helping prepare food

    • Preparing worksheets on numeracy and literacy.

    • Playing sports and organizing arts/craft workshops.

    (This programme is available in Nairobi, Nakuru & Mombasa.)



    6. Computer Skills Training

    In this digital generation computer skills are very important. The aim of this programme is to provide students and communities with computer skills. This can be done in schools or in community learning centres. Many people in Kenya do not have access to a computer, however, with the help of community centres, accessibility to computers is made easier.


    As a volunteer you can make a difference by sharing your computer skills and knowledge with students and communities in Kenya. Volunteers doing computer skills training will be placed in either schools or community centres.


    Volunteers will take part in the following
    • Teaching basic knowledge about computers including what they do, differentiating the parts of a computer, and the classification of different computers.

    • Teaching how to use applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc

    • Teaching about data security and control, data presentation and processing.

    7. Teaching Foreign Language

    This program gives you an opportunity to teach foreign language to students in Kenya. There are six languages that are taught in Kenyan schools: French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Arabic, and English.


    We are living in a world that is becoming like a global village today. The job market is changing and so is the demand for learning foreign language. Kenyan schools are teaching foreign language to enable their students to communicate abroad and be an advantage to them during job seeking. You can make a difference in the lives of this children by teaching them a foreign language.


    (The program is available in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Nakuru)



    8. Dance Training

    If you would like to share your creative talent and skills on a volunteer programme   abroad then you are in the right place!


    In the slums of Kenya, especially in Nairobi city, life comes with many challenges. However, there is still a lot to offer from those who reside in the slums of Kenya. Many people who live in Kibera aspire to have jobs in the arts, specifically dance.

    Dance provides a creative outlet that helps to develop many skills. Not many people from Kenya have been able to travel and get scholarships to advance their talent. However, dance also helps to avoid challenges in the slums such as child/teen pregnancy and drug abuse.


    As a volunteer, you need to have an open mind, a can-do attitude and be ready to work with what is available. In this programme, volunteers will have a chance to learn Kenyan dances as well as share your own dance skills too.


    Volunteers will take part in the following
    • Coaching dance sessions for children and adults

    • Enjoy learning traditional Kenyan dances

    9. Yoga Training

    Life in Kenya comes with a lot of stress for many people due to reasons such as their economic situation or health. Yoga can therefore act as a coping mechanism for stress. Regular yoga practice creates clarity and calmness which relieves chronic stress patterns and relaxes the mind.


    The purpose of yoga is to build strength, awareness and harmony in both the mind and body. There are several physical benefits of yoga such as increased flexibility and strength and improved respiration.


    As a volunteer taking part in our yoga programme, you will need to have an open mind and be prepared to work with limited resources. Volunteers will take part in the following:

    • Introducing yoga to Kenyan communities

    • Assisting with teaching yoga

    10. Medical Programme

    *This programme is only available to medical professionals*


    Are you interested in being a medical volunteer?

    We offer opportunities in multiple areas, such as: emergency care, radiology, dentistry, pediatrics, surgery, maternity care, HIV/AIDS support and nursing. Volunteers are placed in medical clinics, dispensaries and hospitals, aiming to support the Kenyan medical professionals.


    This programme is available throughout the year with flexible start dates and duration. Serving as a medical volunteer will give you the opportunity to help the poor communities in Kenya, whilst also enhancing your own medical skills and experience.

    Volunteers will also get the opportunity to learn about the healthcare system in Kenya and contribute to the wellbeing of the larger society.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Performing basic health checks such as checking a patient's temperature, blood pressure, pulse and recording their weight.

    • Maintaining files and assisting with daily routines.

    • Educating communities about how to lead a healthy lifestyle, diseases, prevention of diseases and immunization importance.

    (This programme is available in Nairobi, Maasai, Nakuru and Kisumu.)



    11. Medical Outreach

    *This programme runs at specific times, depending on funding and availability of volunteers.*


    This programme strives to provide medical services to those unable to access healthcare services or receive knowledge about various health issues. Volunteers will work alongside local medical professionals to help provide a diagnosis and treatment to people in the local communities. They would also establish partnerships with local community health workers.


    At Acts of Compassion we believe that everyone should have access to medical care. Therefore, our foundation targets remote and rural villages in Kenya where healthcare services are non-existent or not accessible.


    This programme is funded by well-wishers and Acts of Compassion. If you want to take part in this programme, you will need to assist in the fundraising for a medical camp. The duration of the medical camp is depends on the amount of funding available.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Assisting medical professionals to diagnose and treat basic health issues.

    • Assist in counseling sessions

    • Educating communities about their health and how to practice safe hygiene practices.

    • Educating families about nutrition and sanitation

    • Providing sanitary products to women and girls

    (This programme is available in Nairobi, Maasai, Nakuru and Kisumu.)



    12. Physiotherapy

    If you are looking for a physiotherapy volunteer opportunity, you are in the right place!


    This particular programme is most suitable for both physical therapy students and qualified physical therapists. This programme enables you to take part in meaningful volunteer work relevant to your area of expertise with the opportunity to give back to communities with limited access to healthcare.


    As a physical therapist volunteer you will be working alongside local physical therapists in a variety of special needs, care homes and clinics.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Assist patients unable to complete tasks/activities independently

    • Help patients improve on their mobility

    • Helping patients who have been injured to determine what they might need in future to be able to perform daily tasks

    • Helping patients who have been injured to determine what they might need in future to be able to perform daily tasks

    • Assist patients who have experienced changes in their physical abilities adapt and return to work

    13. Building and Renovation

    Are you are interested in a building and construction programme abroad?

    Our foundation offers building and renovation projects in a variety of capacities such as schools and elderly care homes.


    Most of the schools in Kenya lack facilities such as classrooms, washrooms, kitchens, dormitories for boarding schools, libraries and laboratories for high schools.

    With your help we can improve the living standards of poor communities. This programme ensures a positive long-term impact on the community.

    The type of construction work will vary depending on your placement and no experience is needed.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Building new structures for organizations.

    • Renovating existing structures

    (This programme is located in Nairobi.)



    14. Woman’s Empowerment

    The primary aim of this programme is to empower women through income-generating projects, education and skills training.


    Empowering women gives them a voice to defend themselves and learn how to respond to various issues they may experience.

    Additionally, this programme aims to teach women and girls about topics such as reproductive health.


    In Kenya, many women suffer from discrimination, early pregnancies, arranged marriages and school dropouts. Therefore, this programme provides an opportunity to bring woman together to share their experiences, empower one another and motivate each other to achieve personal goals.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Running life skills classes

    • Running classes in schools about sexual health etc.

    • Teaching women about reproductive health, entrepreneurship etc.

    • Assisting with group/individual therapy and counselling.

    (This programme is located in Nairobi)



    15. Occupational Therapy

    Occupational therapy is a mode of intervention/treatment to help people maintain or build their physical and psychological self with the aim of promotion of independence. Occupational therapists provide patients with the skills they require to better support their daily lives and their occupation.


    Volunteers will work in hospitals, elderly homes, rehabilitation centres or special needs schools with children or adults.


    Many patients will have some of the following conditions: Autism, ADHD, downs syndrome, cerebral palsy and schizophrenia. Also, many patients you will work with may have experienced a hand injury, stroke, post burn complications, spinal injury etc.

    As a physical therapist volunteer you will be working alongside local physical therapists in a variety of special needs, care homes and clinics.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Assist patients unable to complete tasks/activities independently

    • Help patients improve in their motor skills or hand eye coordination

    • Assist elderly patients with mobility

    • Assist in schools, helping children to develop skills such as handwriting

    • Help patients suffering from mental health illnesses, manage their illness

    • Helping patients who have been injured to determine what they might need in future to be able to perform daily tasks

    • Assist patients who have experienced changes in physical or mental abilities adapt and return to work.

    (This programme is located in Nairobi.)



    16. Turtle Conservation

    At Acts of Compassion, we offer the opportunity for you to volunteer with turtles in Mombasa, Kenya. The purpose of this programme is to protect the marine environment in Kenya.


    As a turtle conservation volunteer you will work alongside trained individuals and other volunteers to save this endangered species.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:


    Additionally you will work closely with local communities, conducting beach clean-ups, mangrove restoration and regular marine and sea turtle conservation projects.

    • Beach patrols

    • Tracking nesting activity

    • Searching hatching nests

    • Rescuing turtles

    • Releasing older babies back into the ocean

    • Collecting data from nesting females

    • Rehabilitating sick and injured turtles

    (This programme is located in Mombasa)



    17. Community Health Program

    As community health volunteer you will assist the local community health workers in playing a critical role in providing essential health services to the people in need of health services. 


    As a volunteer you contribute to improvement of access to health services to vulnerable population through outreach programs ,health education and referrals to formal health education. This program will give you an opportunity to help the community to improve health literacy and empowering communities to take charge of their health. A volunteer will work at health centers ,community clinics.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Educating the community in wide range of health issues including: Nutrition, Hygiene, family planning and disease prevention

    • Basic health assessments

    • Providing basic health care and support to people with chronic diseases like, HIV\AIDS, tuberculosis, you ensure they adhere to their medication

    • Data collection and reporting to the relevant authority

    • Working with schools to provide health education and promote healthy behaviors among students and teachers

    • Participating in community outreach to provide health education, screening and treatment to patients

    (The program is located in Nairobi, Nakuru and in the Maasai.)



    18. Photography

    Do you want to make a difference using your photography skills as you help local organization? If yes, then our Photography placement will work well for you.


    Most organizations in developing countries are in need of photographers. Photos can be used on an organization’s website, social media, or sent to donors to make a bigger impact in Africa. As a photographer, you will use your skills to capture an organization’s story and events and help them share with world creating awareness of what they doing. As a volunteer, you can also train young people who are passionate about photography, but they can’t afford school fees.


    This will help them expose their talents and potential. As a photographer, you will have opportunity to volunteer with conservation projects, schools, children homes generally all our programs that need photographers to help them in taking pictures.

    Volunteers will take part in the following:

    • Attending Non-profit organizations to take pictures for the charity

    • Training young people on basic photography skills

    • Taking pictures of everyday life in Africa to share with organizations

    (The program is located in Nairobi, Nakuru and in the Maasai.)


    Requirements:

    • Have some experience in photography.

    • Be patient and attentive to details given.

    • Ability to work independently and with the group as well.

    • Have your own camera and photography equipment.

    • Optional: Advanced skills in editing.


    19. Old Age Home

    Old age day cares and home are open for anyone who has a caring heart for the elderly. Professionals such as social workers, caregivers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, nurses, and any other non-professionals can come and volunteer. 


    Old people desire to be loved, but many times feel alone. They also need a lot of care due to their low immune system.

    Elderly people long for care, love and affection. If you understand their needs and concerns you will make them have good health and live longer.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Providing encouragement and conversation

    • Helping them with personal hygiene

    • Feeding those who are not able to feed themselves

    • Taking them out for exercise for those who have mobility problems

    • Housekeeping from the kitchen to their dormitories

    • Taking them for medical checkups

    • Preparation of their food


    20. Gardening and Food Production

    Would you love to volunteer on a farm and get your hands dirty while you help people? If yes, then get involved in our program for gardening and food production. As a volunteer, you will be working with communities and schools to transfer your knowledge about crops and how they can be grown for personal or domestic use. There is a need for sustainable agriculture practices to increase food production in poor communities. Lack of sustainable agriculture practices has led communities to go hungry, which results in environmentally threatening activities. The main aim of this project is to support communities and schools in teaching agricultural skills for sustainable food production.


    As a volunteer, you will work in either rural areas, or within Nairobi, to help families and schools grow their own food source and have nutrients that are required by the body. This project will also help unemployed youths to have an income of their own and also improve food security in their community.


    Volunteers will take part in the following:
    • Crop farming

    • Urban gardening

    • Animal care

    • Making chicken coops

    • Backyard farming


    21. Sports Program

    Are you someone who loves physical activities? If yes, then you are in the right place. Sports play a very important role in creating positive attributes in an individual, especially in high poverty areas. This includes character building, well-being, and good moral health in people. This program allows you to work directly with local schools’ sports groups to help shape talents. As a volunteer, you will get the opportunity to share your knowledge and experience in sports with our coaches. Sports programs have limited resources, so feel free to come with sports equipment.


    The main sports we have is: soccer, rugby, netball, volleyball, tennis, and basketball. If you are placed in a school this will happen during break time and after school.


    Volunteers will take part in the following
    • Setting up sports games & classes

    • Teaching new sports

    • Participating in sports and overall having fun and positive energy

  • Volunteers will be staying with Kenyan families that we call “homestay.” All our homestays have been vetted and proven to be safe for volunteers. Homestays gives you an opportunity to learn about the culture at first hand. Volunteers should expect to share rooms from four volunteers per room and above of same gender. Rooms consist of single beds and bunk beds. Beddings are provided. 


    You can as well ask for private rooms for exclusive space and provide you with privacy, comfort and convenience for an extra fee. Most homestays will have electricity and running water, except Maasai placement. Volunteers should expect some days without running water or electricity. After all, it is Africa! At some point volunteers might use bucket shower depending on homestay.

    As stated, volunteers in the Massai placement should expect not to have electricity or running water. Bucket shower is an order of the day and squat toilets. 


    These experiences will provide you an idea of how an everyday African lives. You will be able to go home and say, “I know Africa!”

Meals
Kenya is one of the most diverse countries in all of Africa. Because of the variety of tribes and ethnicities, Kenya has variety of foods. Volunteers will receieve three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at their homestays. Breakfast is usually chai (tea), mandazi (fried dough), fruit, or toast. Lunch consists of rice with vegetables or beans. Dinner consists of Kenyan food such as ugali, chapati, vegetables, rice, and sometimes meat. If you are not returning to your homestay for lunch, be sure to pack your lunch in the morning. Bottle water is available at $5 USD per litre.If you have any special dietary requirements, please let us know ahead of time so that we can be best prepared for you.


Visa
Everyone is required to obtain a visa to enter Kenya.How to apply:
At this time, Kenya requires that all visa obtain a visa online through their e-visa system in order to enter Kenya. The e-visa is issued through the Department of Immigration Services for a fee of $50 USD. An e-visa must be used within three months once it has been issued. Therefore, it is important to apply for your e-visa within three months of your departure. All visitors must hold a passport valid for six months. Visas should be applied at least 7 days in advance and you can only stay for 90 days.


Orientation
Orientation is done the day after your arrival. At this time, you to get all the information about your placement and Kenya in general. You will be given guidelines to help you adopt to the country and keep safety as a priority.


Arrival and airport pick up
When booking your flight, make sure you are arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. One of our team members will be waiting for you to drive you to your homestay.
