  • Terra Sylvestris are a not for profit non governmental grassroots organisation based in Greece composed of a dedicated group of people driven by their desire to protect the environment through specific courses of action such as environmental conservation projects and scientific research targeted towards sustainable development.


    They achieve their goals by providing solutions to local environmental problems through targeted conservation actions, empowerment and education of local communities to protect their environment, relevant legal actions and the provision of viable sustainable economic alternatives to human practices that are environmentally destructive.

  • Their goal is for the station to function as a year round base for the monitoring programs of our Kalamos and Kastos sustainable development program including the volunteers participating in our activities through their field volunteer program, researchers and related field practitioners working in various projects in Kalamos and the surrounding marine and terrestrial region. The station is also here to function as an educational and discussion center promoting awareness towards protection of ecosystems and the environment and in finding solutions to various related issues. It is also a point of hospitality for their ecotourist services of guests wishing to enjoy the spectacular nature this region has to offer.

    These projects provide volunteers with hands-on experience in environmental conservation, community engagement, and cultural exchange. Here's a closer look at the various roles available:


    Sustainable Agriculture & Agroforestry

    Volunteers will help develop and maintain sustainable agricultural practices that promote healthy ecosystems and biodiversity. This includes planting trees, managing crops, and learning about agroforestry techniques that integrate agriculture with forest conservation.


    Forest Protection & Restoration

    This role involves activities to protect and restore the island’s forests. Volunteers will participate in tree planting, removal of invasive species, and monitoring forest health to ensure the longevity and resilience of these vital ecosystems.


    Agricultural Diversity

    Volunteers will work on projects that enhance the diversity of agricultural practices on the island. This includes cultivating a variety of crops, studying local plant species, and promoting techniques that support soil health and ecological balance.


    Marine Ecosystem Restoration

    Engage in efforts to restore and protect marine habitats around Kalamos Island. Volunteers will assist in activities such as coral reef restoration, monitoring marine wildlife, and cleaning up coastal areas to support marine biodiversity.


    Fisheries Management

    Work with local fishermen and marine biologists to develop sustainable fishing practices. Volunteers will help collect data on fish populations, educate the community on sustainable practices, and implement strategies to prevent overfishing.


    Human Impacts

    Study and mitigate the impacts of human activities on Kalamos Island’s environment. This includes analyzing pollution sources, developing waste management solutions, and promoting eco-friendly practices among residents and visitors.


    Wildlife Monitoring

    Assist in monitoring the island's wildlife to gather data on species population and health. Volunteers will track animals, record observations, and contribute to research efforts aimed at protecting endangered species and preserving biodiversity.


    Land Use Rights

    Support efforts to secure and manage land use rights for sustainable development. Volunteers will work on mapping projects, engage with local communities, and help advocate for policies that protect natural resources and promote responsible land use.


    Natural Resources

    Participate in the management and conservation of Kalamos Island’s natural resources. Volunteers will assist in water management, soil conservation, and the sustainable use of local materials to ensure long-term ecological health.


    Animal & Plant Biology

    Conduct research on the island’s diverse flora and fauna. Volunteers will gather data, perform field studies, and help document the biological diversity of Kalamos Island to support conservation efforts.


    Research

    Join ongoing research projects focused on environmental science and sustainability. Volunteers will work alongside scientists to collect data, conduct experiments, and contribute to publications that advance our understanding of ecological systems.


    Community Projects

    Engage in initiatives that benefit the local community. This includes educational programs, infrastructure improvements, and collaborative projects aimed at enhancing the quality of life for island residents.

  • The station is housed in the same building as the offices of Terra Sylvestris. The current capacity of the station is up to 14 guests at any single point in time . There are two options for staying with us: either in a in a mixed dorm room of a total capacity of 14 beds or to camp in our camping site in the area of the field station which has a total capacity of 5 tents of 2 people.We have an agreement for access to further facilities of equal standards if the station itself cannot cater for you due to overcapacity at any point in time. People booking will be notified and given all relevant information about the space available in this case.

About Kalamos Island, Greece


Kalamos Island, situated in the Ionian Sea, is a hidden gem of Greece known for its stunning natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. This picturesque island is characterized by its lush, verdant landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and charming traditional villages. Kalamos remains largely untouched by mass tourism, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a serene and authentic Greek experience. The island is rich in biodiversity, featuring diverse flora and fauna, pristine forests, and vibrant marine ecosystems.


The local population of Kalamos is small, and the community is tightly knit, offering a warm and welcoming environment for visitors. Traditional Greek hospitality is evident in the island’s tavernas and local markets, where visitors can enjoy fresh, locally-sourced seafood, olive oil, and other regional delicacies. The island also has a rich history, with remnants of ancient settlements and historical sites scattered throughout, providing a fascinating glimpse into its past.


How to Get to Kalamos Island


Reaching Kalamos Island requires a bit of planning, but the journey is well worth the effort. The most common starting point is the mainland port of Mytikas, located in the Aetolia-Acarnania region of western Greece. Mytikas can be reached by car or bus from major cities such as Athens and Patras. From Athens, the drive to Mytikas takes approximately 4-5 hours, while from Patras it’s about a 2-hour journey.


Once you arrive in Mytikas, you can take a ferry or a private boat to Kalamos. Ferries operate regularly during the tourist season, typically taking around 30-45 minutes to reach the island. It’s advisable to check the ferry schedules in advance, as they can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. Alternatively, for a more personalized experience, you can charter a private boat, which allows for a more flexible schedule and the opportunity to explore the surrounding waters.


For those flying in, the nearest airports are Aktion National Airport (PVK) near Preveza and Araxos Airport (GPA) near Patras. From either airport, you can rent a car or take public transportation to Mytikas. Despite its somewhat remote location, the journey to Kalamos Island is part of the adventure, offering travelers a chance to see more of Greece’s beautiful landscapes and coastal regions. Once you arrive, the island’s unspoiled beauty and peaceful ambiance provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable experience.
