THE JOURNEY
In 2019, we embarked on a journey to Biduk Biduk and instantly connected with its people, culture, and the plethora of remarkable experiences it holds. Returning in 2024, we witnessed the ongoing efforts to safeguard the forests, mangroves, and beaches, while also striving to boost the local economy in an area with limited opportunities.
During our stay with the dedicated host family of Mr. Samsul and Nova, we were inspired to establish this volunteer program for three compelling reasons:

Despite its abundant beauty, Biduk Biduk often remains undiscovered by tourists due to its remote location. Our volunteer program provides a unique opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in an authentic and personalized experience.

At Biduk Roots, our mission is to restore and maintain the forests of East Borneo, revive the mangroves along the coastlines, and provide alternative sustainable livelihoods for the local community. We are committed to preserving the natural environment while fostering economic growth and resilience through sustainable practices. By integrating conservation efforts with community development, we aim to ensure a thriving ecosystem and a prosperous future for the people of East Borneo.
**Volunteer Role Opportunities at Biduk Roots**
As a volunteer for Biduk Roots, you will have the opportunity to engage in various community-driven projects. Your involvement will make a significant impact on the environment and the local community. If there are specific activities you are interested in or if you have your own ideas to contribute, please do not hesitate to let us know.
**Volunteer Activities:**
1. **Forest Restoration**
- Assist in replanting native tree species and maintaining forested areas.
- Participate in reforestation projects to help restore East Borneo's forests.
2. **Mangrove Planting**
- Engage in planting and nurturing mangroves along the coastline.
- Help revive these crucial ecosystems to protect against coastal erosion and support marine life.
3. **Nutmeg Harvesting**
- Participate in the harvesting and processing of nutmeg.
- Support local farmers and learn about sustainable agricultural practices.
4. **Coconut Craft Workshop**
- Create crafts from coconuts and other local materials.
- Promote sustainable livelihoods through artisanal skills.
5. **Community Education**
- Educate the local community about environmental conservation and sustainable practices.
- Conduct workshops and outreach programs.
6. **Beach Cleaning**
- Help clean and maintain local beaches to protect marine life and improve the coastal environment.
- Raise awareness about the impact of pollution.
7. **Data Collection**
- Assist in collecting and analyzing data on local flora and fauna.
- Contribute to research projects that inform conservation efforts.
8. **Foraging**
- Learn and practice sustainable foraging techniques.
- Support local food security and biodiversity.
9. **Arts & Crafts**
- Engage in creative projects that promote cultural heritage and environmental awareness.
- Help organize art workshops and community events.
10. **Fundraising**
- Participate in fundraising activities to support Biduk Roots’ projects.
- Help plan and execute events to raise awareness and funds.
11. **Your Own Projects**
- Bring your own ideas and initiatives to Biduk Biduk.
- Collaborate with our team to develop and implement new projects that align with our mission.

Accomodation
The accommodation is a traditional & authentic stay with a local Biduk Biduk family.
Live the way the locals do. Become fully integrated and become a new member of the family. The option to stay at the ocean side guesthouse are also available if a room is available.

Location
The Location of Biduk Biduk is around 8hrs via car from either Balikpapan or Tanjung Redeb.
This Biduk Roots Program is FREE
We work on a donation basis. At the end of your stay we hope you can provide a donation to how much you are happy to pay, which will represent how extraordinary your trip was.
Pre-booked Transportation & 2 Weeks Accommodation Fee for Only - €100
A Security Deposit of €50 will also be required.
(Fully Refunded at the end of the trip)

Project Flexibility
This unique program is designed to give you ultimate freedom, allowing you to work as much or as little as you like, while having the adventures right on your door step. Leaving you with a home from home in East Borneo. This will be a truly remarkable ADVENTURE with a PURPOSE.
All donations are contributions to the conservation projects, the livelihoods of your host family and other future projects.
However, due to the location of Biduk Biduk we are unable to provide transportation, so this cost will need to be covered beforehand.
You have the freedom to stay as little or as long as you like, though we do also require a small fee per 2 weeks for housing, food, etc.
Please Note: we would recommend pre-booking some of your Biduk Biduk adventures in advanced to save you from any hassle during your stay.
