  • The fact that Indonesia is flooded with plastic and at the same time the species-rich rainforests are transformed into monocultural palm oil plantations is no longer a novelty. Driven by the will to tackle these problems, Project Wings came up with the idea of introducing an Ecobrick deposit system. The locals were motivated by the payment to collect the plastic waste. The Ecobrick is not a "reinvention", but rather a globally widespread solution method for compressing waste and using it as a building material. However, the idea of an Ecobrick deposit system is an innovation in ecobricking.

Since the founding of Project Wings in March 2019, they have already been able to achieve numerous progress and goals. Together with volunteers, sympathizers, experts and many supporters from Indonesia and Germany, they have been able to grow strongly to this day. They are constantly trying to develop themselves, optimize processes, learn from mistakes and bundle findings and channel solutions together with other organizations.

In the meantime, they have been able to erect seven important public buildings made of ecobricks on and around the recycling village with their innovative construction method, and two more are nearing completion. More than 220 tons of plastic waste have been collected, cleaned, processed and reused so far. Together with local organizations and the support of the government, they are in the process of establishing the first waste management system in the region.

So far, more than 35,000 trees have been planted and meaningful animal welfare programs have been implemented. In Germany, too, they were able to get children and young people excited about the topic of environmental protection at many schools and support our regional orchards.

Every Monday our Monday-Clean-Up is happening! The whole team gathers to clean a certain area in and around Bukit Lawang, collecting trash which we then transport to the trashbank. In addition, every Wednesday and Friday we have a joint morning routine where the team gathers for about 1 hour to help a designated division to achieve great progress together in a short period of time. This is a great way to get to know the different divisions even better and to make connections.

Project Location

Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side.
