    South African Shark Conservancy works alongside government, industry, academia, and eNGO sectors to co-develop sustainable management approaches and conservation objectives for sharks, their relatives and coastal ocean ecosystems.

    SASC is a not-for-profit organization based in Hermanus, Western Cape. Formed in 2007, SASC has become globally recognized for our collaborative approach to conservation and for our work on sharks and ocean ecosystems.

    SASC employs a holistic and inclusive research approach, working to promote the sustainable use and informed conservation of sharks and oceans.

  • The South African Shark Conservancy has been training early career scientists, conservationists, ocean and shark lovers for more than 10 years. 


    Assist in marine research by participating in shark tagging, deploying underwater video systems, conducting ecological and diversity surveys of Great White Sharks, and managing and analyzing collected data to support ongoing marine conservation efforts.


    The Shark Academy is the formal skills development and training division for anyone interested in shark science, research diving, science communication, aquarium husbandry, and so much more.

    SASC work to ensure sharks have a continued place in our oceans. Interns or volunteers who choose to join our team do so knowing that they make a positive and long lasting contribution to their research. In return they will provide you with an unforgettable research experience that will carry you forward in your career. Whether you’re an early career scientist or are just passionate about shark conservation, your experience with the Shark Academy will be one you never forget.


    Get ready for an exhilarating adventure at sea where you’ll actively participate in shark conservation and research activities. From tagging sharks to deploying advanced underwater video systems, your days will be filled with hands-on experiences and opportunities to deepen your understanding of marine ecosystems.


    Your Experience Includes:


    Shark Tagging: Assist in tagging sharks to track their movements and behavior patterns, contributing to vital conservation efforts.


    BRUV Surveys: Deploy baited remote underwater video systems (BRUVs) to observe and document shark populations in their natural habitat.


    Ecological Surveys: Participate in surveys to assess the health of marine ecosystems and monitor changes in shark populations.


    Great White Shark Focal Surveys: Conduct focused surveys on Great White Sharks to gather data on their behavior and habitat preferences.


    Database Management & Data Analysis: Learn essential skills in managing and analyzing data collected from research expeditions.


    Lectures & Workshops: Engage in educational sessions led by marine biologists and conservationists, covering topics ranging from shark biology to marine conservation strategies.

  • During your time with us, you'll reside at the Shark Conservancy House, located in Onrus, a charming seaside suburb of Hermanus. Our accommodation is conveniently situated within walking distance of the beach and local shops. 


    Please note that you will be sharing accommodation with fellow volunteers, fostering a collaborative and community-focused environment.


    Onrus is a charming suburb located near Hermanus in the Western Cape province of South Africa, renowned for its scenic beauty and relaxed coastal atmosphere. Nestled between the majestic mountains and the azure waters of Walker Bay, Onrus offers visitors and residents alike a tranquil retreat with a distinct blend of natural wonders and small-town charm.


    The suburb is famous for its pristine beaches, including the idyllic Onrus Beach, which is popular among swimmers, surfers, and families seeking a peaceful seaside escape. The area is also known for its rich biodiversity, making it a haven for nature lovers and bird watchers.


    Onrus boasts a welcoming community with a laid-back lifestyle, characterized by its quaint cafes, local art galleries, and boutique shops. Its proximity to the larger town of Hermanus provides easy access to additional amenities and attractions, such as whale-watching tours (during the whale season) and hiking trails offering breathtaking views of the coastline.

A Typical Day In The Field


Lesson 1: there is no such thing as a typical day in the field. The weather is unpredictable and so are the sea conditions. One of the most valuable skills you will learn as a member of the Shark Academy is to be adaptable. If we can't get to sea, there is plenty to keep you busy in the Shark Lab. You will help maintain research equipment, enter data, run experiments, write your own research reports, assist other research duties and so much more.
